  • Birth  1830  Ballyragget, County Kilkenny, Ireland Find all individuals with events at this location  [1, 3
    • John R. Bowes said he was born in 1831, but the 1880 U.S. Census said about 1834 and that he was age 46 in 1880. The headstone says 1830. I am going with the headstone. I may have made a mistake about the census record.

"It seems that around 1859 he and at least one of his brothers decided to homestead around Hennepin County in Minnesota, just above St. Anthony's Falls. They stayed six months and built their cabins. There were Sioux Indians there who seemed friendly, but while the brothers were visiting their sister in Milwaukee, they massacred a hundred and seventy people, so the brothers never returned [to the homestead]."

_MILT  "Dennis was drafted into the Confederate Army and served for twenty-nine months. On cavalry patrol one night, he was picked up by an Illinois outfit and thrown into an old barn with Union soldiers. He recognized a man by the name of Reagan, a former neighbor in Ireland, who told him to get out for, otherwise, he would be sent to prison in Chicago. At dusk, they loosened the base of the barn wall, and when the guards were in front he escaped. While disappearing over a railroad siding, he was shot at. He reached Cairo, Illinois wearing Reagan's coat and hat and went to his former boarding house where he got his civilian clothes. Then he became a bartender there because he would have been drafted if he had returned to Jamesville."

Some detail here may not be accurate, or there are no records of his service anywhere, because I cannot find a Dennis Bowes in a Confederate cavalry in the National Park Service's database of Civil War soldiers. There are two by the name of Dennis Bowes, but their details really conflict with the story here. While the database is considered a complete list of soldiers on record, I do not know whether many soldiers fought for whom no record exists.

In support of the story, the military at Cairo was charged with transporting Confederate prisoners to Chicago, and Cairo had a street of saloons to serve the large union military presence there.

    • John R. Bowes handwritten records state he died in 1912, but according to the headstones his wife died in 1912. It's possible I mis-entered John's notes.
